EASE OF USE

The GX-1i features an ergonomic design that will easily fit into the palm of your hand. It has a smooth black plastic base and a rubbery grip for your fingers to stay on regardless of weathers. The ultra light and small design also makes this device easier to handle.

Like almost all other good rangerfinders, the Leupold GX-1i comes with a carrying pouch and a lanyard. You can use the hook that is built into the pouch to clip on your golfbag and golfcart or the a loop behind the pouch to attach it to your bell. There are one slot for cleaning clothes (included one) and one for a extra CR-2 battery (not included). But to my experience, you can just leave the pouch at home and put the GX-1i in your pocket. It it small and light enough to fit in your pocket.

The GX-1i has two buttons. One on the top where your index finger will likely lay, the bottom one is placed on the side, which reduces the chance of it being accidentally pushed.

You can also fold the eye cup down if you use glasses to see more clearly.

The UI (user interface) of the GX-1i is very simple. You push the top button to power on the device, push another time to fire the laser and start measuring. The side one is used to toggle between modes. You can use this button to choose whether you want the reading to be in yards or meters. You can also choose between seven different targeting reticules to fit your styles. One more cool thing, the “Fog-mode” is an always-on feature that help locating target regardless of weather conditions.

PERFORMANCE

Leupold says that the GX-1i can range 400 yards to a pin, 800 yards to a reflective prism under good conditions. The device performs nicely up to 200 yards, from 200 to 300 yards it somewhat continues to perform well. Further than 300 yards and it is no longer accurate. But to be honest, my golf skill cannot outshine the GX-1i’s capability of measuring in reality.

The unit’s accuracy is improved with many cool features, including:

All of these, especially Pinhunter, impressed me when I test them when I wrote the Leupold GX-1i review.

Apart from all of the specs listed above, in my Leupold GX-1i review, I find that the scan mode is also a handy feature to have on courses. This mode give you the ability to take multiple readings in matter of a button. Everything you need to do is to hold the power button a few seconds, and voila, you have all the measurements you want accurately.

If you’re looking for simple rangefinder without a lot of distracting features, then the GX-1i is a no-brainer. You should know the fact that having the exact distance from you to the flag is much more crucial than spending time messing around with GPS, slope, etc.

It is also essential to point out that there is a battery indicator at the bottom part of the viewfinder. And more important, the unit’s battery will last for about 6000 actuation, that is quite a while from the next battery replacement.

VALUE

With less than $300 including worldwide shipping, you can have this wonderful piece of technology. For that price, a rangefinder that features Prism Lock, PinHunter, scanning, weatherproof housing and a lot of other features is a no-brainer.
